Bada Imambada Tour

Varanasi
Everyday

When Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula moved the capital of Avadh from Faizabad to Lucknow in 1774, he began a dynastic love affair with the place which transformed it from a sleepy settlement into one of the most beautiful cities of the world at the time.

We navigate through a series of fascinating monuments built by a succession of Nawabs and trace the evolving dynamics of their fatal relationship with the British. We explore Palace complexes, gardens and streets that witnessed thousands of war-casualties, pour over old maps and lithographs, walk around ruined royal homes with vast underground galleries (being excavated), stand under intricate old archways and double domed mousleums with a birds eye view of the city. And we ponder over one of the most intriguing phenomenon of recent history – the rise of Colonialism!

Walk Highlights

Labyrinth with 1024 ways to reach the rooftop, but only 1 to come down

Stand under the Imambara’s huge unsupported vaulted ceiling – among the largest in the world; Explore Beautiful Baoli (Stepwell) and Asafi Masjid

Colorful narratives of the Local guides and insights into the many quirks of the building

Historical context and anecdotes of the Imambara’s construction
Rumi Darwaza – Architectural nuances, Building innovations

A wonderful overview of lucknow!

I have lived in Lucknow for over 10 years and ashamed to admit that I havent explored the city. I believe visiting buildings nd monuments is pointless unless you can place some context to them. And Roobaroo does that beautifully. The Benares walks i had participated in were excellent and my expectations were high. Roobaroo didnot dissappoint. There were so many highlights – the war chronicles whilst walking through the Residency ( Sameer is an informative and pasionate storyteller – donot miss this!), walk through the bylanes of Chowk, Baradari area, Hazratganj, the visit to Bhatkhande and Naimat khana and of course the informal interation with Mr. Bajpai all so beautifully interspersed. Sameer and Aayush you provided such a comprehensive context (historical, political, economic and social context) of the city- its past and present, you made me appreciate and fall in love with city! Thank you. By – Padmini S (2 October 2019)

much is there to see

Since I visited Lukhnow for the first time, it is good to have experience of old city walk. Both imambada are in this area. It is worth visiting place from the historical point of view. By – Cw131918 (14 January 2020)
